Gayus declared suspect for bribing warden

Police declared case broker suspect Gayus Halomoan Tambunan a suspect for bribing a warden and his subordinates to allow him to walk out of a police detention center in Depok, West Java.

“Yes [Gayus is a suspect] because he is the main cause of this escape incident,” National Police general affairs chief Sr. Comr. Marwoto Soeto said Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Depok Police detention center warden Comr. Iwan Siswanto admitted via his lawyer Berlin Pandiangan that Gayus had given him a total of Rp 368 million (US$40,000) to allow him to temporarily leave his cell.

Iwan said he began receiving money from Gayus in July.

The Gayus “escape” stole news headlines over the weekend after a man who resembled Gayus was seen watching a tennis tournament in Bali instead of residing in the Depok Police detention center.

Police confirmed Sunday that a man who resembled Gayus stayed at the Westin Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali .

“He came here using another name. There were six people in his group,” Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Hadiatmoko said, as quoted by kompas.com.

However, the police had yet to determine when “Gayus” checked in and checked out, he said, adding that the Bali Police had only assisted the National Police in resolving an incident where “Gayus” allegedly bribed the Depok Police Mobil Brigade detention center warden to temporarily take leave from the jail.

Hadiatmoko said he could not confirm whether or not that the man was really Gayus, claiming that it was under the authority of the National Police.
